The SuperB™B-5 triple "ESACOIL"™ pickup, was designed to replicate the two most sought-after bass rock tones of all times, the Precision and the Stingray, on just one instrument.

The whole idea of the SuperB™ bass and of the Frudua "ESACOIL"™ pickup has a curious story which involved a lot of bass friendly attitude and thoughts. If you're interested here it is...

It was a long time since me and friend designer Luca Schiavo, were brainstorming on how to provide the Precision and the Stingray tones on just one instrument but we were facing some problems.

The position a pickups is placed along the scale of an instrument plays a crucial role in its tone.

Move the pickups and the tone it's lost.

The problem here was that a true combination of the P and the MM is impossible because if you want to respect their original position on the 34" scale they would overlap one on each other.

We consequently came out with the idea of building a totally new pickup which was not actually a single pickups but a mix of different coils which can be managed to capture each of those tone in the almost exact original position of the scale.

The triple Frudua "ESACOIL"™ pickup is in fact a system of 6 bobbins (above a photo of the handmade prototype) which are matched to potentially achieve a number of different tone combinations (below) all humcancelling thanks to the RW/RP design.

We tried many different combinations of magnets power, coil wire, circuitry and coil combinations and after about one year of thoughts and tests. we went for 3 of them, the ones which resulted to deliver the best character and tone difference in order to go for a simple circuit anyone could understand (below).

The space reflecting and receiving the strings' vibrations between the strings and the guitar's top and between the end of fretboard and the bridge has, in my opinion, some impact on both tone and volume of an instrument.

This is even more true on the bass guitar, where some playing techniques involve hitting the end of fretboard while playing, thus influencing the strings' harmonic vibration pattern and content so, therefore, the tone.

In my opinion, some of the Precision and old 20 frets basses' rock tone, comes exactly from this and too many frets would kill the original sound.

We consequently went for a 21 frets fretboard. The original tone is 99% preserved but you can go up to an E ;).

Finally we choose for a 18mm string's spacing. The reason being that 18 mm are large enough for finger style players to find themselves "at home" like on 4 strings basses, while it still gives enough room for slap techniques. This also allowed us to keep the neck a bit lighter for more balance.

The SuperB™B-5 triple "ESACOIL"™ pickup is probably one of the most cool and innovative ideas of the last years. It now only allows you to have the best rock tones of all times on your new bass, it also allow you to discover new combinations of these famous sounds which will bring you to create a new range of personal tones and perhaps the new bass-player hero the bass world is waiting for since a long time.

We are sure, just like it happened to us in this prototype years, you will have a good time playing it and that you will be able to appreciate and make a treasure of all the designing efforts behind this wonderful bass.
